M with an accent or a dot

The difference between ṁ and ṃ

Both letters have a dot, but its position changes the character. In ṁ, the dot is above m. In ṃ, it is below. The capitals follow the same pattern: Ṁ and Ṃ. This matters when you’re copying a pronunciation guide or a word written with Latin letters.

Ḿ and ḿ have an acute accent

The small sloping line on ḿ is an acute accent. It is not a dot or a short horizontal line. If your source uses this mark, choose ḿ rather than ṁ. Use Ḿ when the same letter needs to be capitalized.

Copy the letter with its mark included

You can paste these characters into a document without adding a separate dot. After pasting, check that the mark is visible in the font you’re using. A tight line height can make a dot above or below a letter harder to see.

How to type m with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked m. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ṃ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ṃ with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ṃ, use 1E43. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 1E43, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ṃ.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing.
