Ț and Ţ are not the same character

Ț and ț have a comma below. Ţ and ţ have a cedilla. Romanian uses the comma-below form ț, so check the shape and character when copying Romanian text. Some fonts make the two marks look similar, but their Unicode codes are different.

The mark beside ť is a caron

The letter ť has a caron that often looks like an apostrophe beside the t. Capital Ť shows the mark above the letter. Copy ť as one character; typing a normal t followed by an apostrophe won’t produce the same spelling.

Dots, strokes, and the letter thorn

Use ṫ for a dot above and ṭ for a dot below. A stroke through t gives you ŧ. You’ll also find þ and Þ, called thorn. Thorn is a separate letter, not t with a decorative mark, so choose it only when it belongs in your text.

How to type t with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked t. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ț, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ț with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ț, use 021B. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 021B, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ț.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing.
