Ṽ and ṽ have a tilde

The wavy line above ṽ is a tilde. It is part of the character you copy, so you don’t need to type a separate ~ next to v. For uppercase text, choose Ṽ from the capital group.

Ṿ and ṿ have a dot underneath

In ṿ, the dot sits below the point of the v. The capital is Ṿ. If the mark looks too close to the next line after pasting, check your line spacing. Keep the actual character rather than replacing the dot with a full stop.

ʋ can look a little like u

The hooked letter ʋ has a rounded shape that can resemble u in some fonts. Its capital form is Ʋ. It is not a font variant of plain v or u. Use the character’s name or Unicode value when the shape alone is unclear.

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked v. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ṽ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ṽ with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ṽ, use 1E7D. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 1E7D, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ṽ.
