Why the mark on ď looks different

The letter ď is d with a caron. In many fonts, the mark looks like a small apostrophe beside the tall stem. Its capital, Ď, usually shows the familiar v-shaped mark above. Don’t replace ď with a plain d followed by an apostrophe; that would be two different characters.

Đ and Ð are easy to confuse

The lowercase letters make the difference clearer: đ is d with a stroke, while ð is called eth. Their capitals, Đ and Ð, can look very similar. This page includes both so you can match the exact letter in the word you’re copying.

Dots and lines below d

Use ḋ for a dot above, ḍ for a dot below, and ḏ for a line below. You’ll also see ḓ, with a circumflex underneath. These small details matter when copying text from another writing system into Latin letters, where a mark can represent a different sound.

How to type d with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked d. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ď, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ď with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ď, use 010F. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 010F, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ď.

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing.
