G with an accent: matching the mark

Ğ and ğ have a breve

A breve is the shallow curve above ğ. It differs from the pointed v on ǧ, which is a caron. Look closely at the bottom of the mark: a smooth curve and a sharp point identify two different characters. The capital versions are Ğ and Ǧ.

A dot, a roof, or a sloping line

Use ġ for g with a dot above, ĝ for g with a circumflex, and ǵ for g with an acute accent. Their capitals are Ġ, Ĝ, and Ǵ. These names can help you find the right letter when someone describes the mark rather than sending the character.

Why ģ can look unusual

The character ģ is named g with cedilla in Unicode, though fonts often show a small turned comma above the lowercase letter. The capital Ģ usually has its mark below. Copy the character itself rather than trying to recreate the shape with punctuation.

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked g. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ğ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ğ with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ğ, use 011F. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 011F, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ğ.
