Lowercase h

Uppercase H

H with a dot, stroke, or accent above

Ḣ and Ḥ put the dot in different places

Use ḣ or Ḣ when the dot belongs above the letter. Use ḥ or Ḥ when it belongs below. In text copied from a printed page, a faint dot can be easy to miss. Check its position before choosing the character.

Ĥ, Ḧ, and Ȟ have different marks

A roof-shaped circumflex gives you ĥ. Two dots make ḧ, and a v-shaped caron makes ȟ. The uppercase forms are Ĥ, Ḧ, and Ȟ. Copying one of these letters keeps the accent in place without adding a separate mark.

ħ is a letter with a stroke

The line in ħ runs through the letter rather than sitting above or below it. Its capital is Ħ. Don’t use a strikethrough formatting option to imitate it: formatting changes how plain h looks, while ħ is a different character in the text.

For a single letter, use the copy buttons above. Paste with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac; on a phone, touch and hold a text field and choose Paste. To write a longer message, open the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type h with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked h. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ḥ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

No numeric keypad? Copy and paste works without one. Some laptops have an embedded keypad, but how you turn it on depends on the model.

Type ḥ with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ḥ, use 1E25. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

  • Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
  • Type 1E25, without the U+ prefix.
  • Select just that code and press ALT + X.
  • The selected code changes to ḥ.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for more about these two methods. To look up another letter, use the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing. You can always copy ḥ from this page and paste it with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, tap a copy button here, then use Paste in the app where you’re writing.

Unicode and HTML codes for accented h

Use this table when you need the character’s code rather than the letter itself. Unicode identifies the character; the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript columns show ways to write it in code. For a normal message or document, copying the letter is enough.

H with an accent: common questions

A little help choosing and typing the right character.

Click ḥ for lowercase or Ḥ for uppercase. These are different from ḣ and Ḣ, which have the dot above.

Ħ and ħ are H and h with a stroke. Choose them from the grid instead of applying a line through a normal h.

Type 1E25, select those four characters, and press Alt + X in Word for Windows. Use 1E24 for the capital Ḥ.
