P with an acute accent, dot, or stroke

Ṕ and Ṗ: one line or one dot

The letter ṕ has an acute accent above it. The letter ṗ has a dot in that position. Their capitals are Ṕ and Ṗ. When you’re working from small print, zoom in before copying: a faint line can easily look like a dot.

ᵽ and ƥ change the letter’s shape

The stroke in ᵽ and the hook in ƥ belong to the characters themselves. They are not formatting applied to plain p. Use the uppercase grid when you need a capital, since the capital shape may not look exactly like an enlarged lowercase letter.

Keeping a marked p in plain text

A copied ṗ includes both p and its dot as a single character. You can paste it into a message or document without positioning the mark yourself. If it appears as a box, try a font that supports more Latin characters.

How to type p with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked p. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ṗ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ṗ with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ṗ, use 1E57. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 1E57, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ṗ.

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing.
