J With Accent: Copy, Paste & Type
There are only a few j forms in this guide: ĵ with a circumflex, ǰ with a caron, and ɉ with a stroke. Choose the one that matches your text and click to copy it.
Lowercase j
Uppercase J
J with an accent: ĵ, ǰ, and ɉ
A roof on ĵ or a v on ǰ
The mark on ĵ points upward like a little roof. It’s called a circumflex. The mark on ǰ is a caron, shaped like a small v. Both sit above j where its dot would usually be. Check which way the mark points before copying.
J with a stroke
The form ɉ has a line through the letter, with Ɉ as its capital. This is a different character from a normal j with strikethrough formatting. Copy it as text so the stroke stays with the letter when you paste into another app.
Finding the capital you need
The uppercase grid includes Ĵ and Ɉ. There isn’t a single-character capital version of ǰ in this grid. To write that form, you can put a separate combining caron after capital J. The mark will sit above the letter, though its position can vary with the font.
For a single letter, use the copy buttons above. Paste with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac; on a phone, touch and hold a text field and choose Paste. To write a longer message, open the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.
ALT codes and typing help for j with an accent
Windows ALT shortcuts and Unicode decimal values are different ways of referring to characters. Entries marked “Unicode decimal” below are reference numbers, not standard Windows ALT shortcuts. For those letters, copy the character or use the Word method below.

How to type j with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked j. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ĵ, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.
Type ĵ with Alt + X in Word
Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ĵ, use 0135. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.
- Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
- Type 0135, without the U+ prefix.
- Select just that code and press ALT + X.
- The selected code changes to ĵ.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for more about these two methods. To look up another letter, use the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing. You can always copy ĵ from this page and paste it with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, tap a copy button here, then use Paste in the app where you’re writing.
Unicode and HTML codes for accented j
Use this table when you need the character’s code rather than the letter itself. Unicode identifies the character; the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript columns show ways to write it in code. For a normal message or document, copying the letter is enough.

J with an accent: common questions
A little help choosing and typing the right character.
That is ĵ, j with a circumflex. Its capital is Ĵ. It differs from ǰ, whose mark points down in the middle like a v.
Some letters have their own single-character capital form, while others need a base letter and a separate combining mark. The capital grid shows the forms available in this collection.
In Word for Windows, type 0135, select the code, and press Alt + X. For capital Ĵ, use 0134.
