Z with an acute accent, dot, or caron

Ź and Ż are different letters

Ź and ź have an acute accent. Ż and ż have a dot above. Both occur in Polish, but they are not interchangeable. When copying a surname, check whether the mark is a line or a dot rather than dropping it from the name.

Ž has a caron; Ẑ has a circumflex

The mark on Ž and ž looks like a small v. The one on Ẑ and ẑ points the other way, like a roof. They have different character codes. If the mark is hard to see in your source, enlarge the text before choosing.

Marks below or through z

Use ẓ for a dot below and ẕ for a line below. The form ƶ has a stroke through the letter. These are different from underlining or striking through plain z in a document. Copy the character itself if you need it to remain correct as plain text.

How to type z with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

There isn’t one Windows ALT shortcut for every marked z. A Unicode decimal number doesn’t automatically work as an ALT code. To enter ž, use the Word steps below or copy it from the grid.

Type ž with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ž, use 017E. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

• Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
• Type 017E, without the U+ prefix.
• Select just that code and press ALT + X.
• The selected code changes to ž.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing.
