C with an accent: ç, ć, č, and more

Ç and ç: c with a cedilla

The little mark under ç is a cedilla. You’ll see it in French français and Portuguese coração. Choose Ç if you need a capital. Because the mark sits below the letter, it’s easy to overlook when you’re reading small text.

Ć, Č, and Ĉ have marks above the letter

Ć has an acute accent, Č has a v-shaped caron, and Ĉ has a roof-shaped circumflex. Their lowercase forms are ć, č, and ĉ. They aren’t interchangeable. Compare the angle of the mark before copying a surname or a word you haven’t seen before.

A dot or more than one mark

For c with a dot above, choose ċ or Ċ. The form ḉ has both a cedilla and an acute accent, so copying plain ç would lose one of its marks. The character grid lets you copy the full letter without assembling it yourself.

For a single letter, use the copy buttons above. Paste with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac; on a phone, touch and hold a text field and choose Paste. To write a longer message, open the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type c with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

For ç, try Alt + 0231 with the usual Western Windows character set. Keep the first zero. The result can depend on your app and system settings.

  • Turn on Num Lock and click where you want the letter.
  • Press and hold the ALT key.
  • Type 0231 on the numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters.
  • Release ALT and check that you get ç.
No numeric keypad? Copy and paste works without one. Some laptops have an embedded keypad, but how you turn it on depends on the model.

Type ç with Alt + X in Word

Word for Windows can turn a Unicode hexadecimal code into a letter. For ç, use 00E7. You don’t need a numeric keypad for this method.

  • Click where the letter belongs in your Word document.
  • Type 00E7, without the U+ prefix.
  • Select just that code and press ALT + X.
  • The selected code changes to ç.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for more about these two methods. To look up another letter, use the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

In supported Mac apps, holding a letter key opens an accent menu. The choices depend on the letter, and less common forms may be missing. You can always copy ç from this page and paste it with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, tap a copy button here, then use Paste in the app where you’re writing.

Use this table when you need the character’s code rather than the letter itself. Unicode identifies the character; the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript columns show ways to write it in code. For a normal message or document, copying the letter is enough.

C with an accent: common questions

A little help choosing and typing the right character.

Ç or ç is c with a cedilla. Copy the lowercase ç for the middle of a word or capital Ç when your spelling calls for it.

Ć has a single sloping acute accent; č has a v-shaped caron. Both may appear in names, but they are distinct letters. Use the one in the original spelling.

Copy ç here, or use Word for Windows: press Ctrl + comma, release both keys, then type c. That Word shortcut may not work in a browser text box.
